Future Old Friends
words by Coach Brendan
This will be my fourth trip to Ecuador. My first was in high school. My Spanish teacher had moved back to Quito and she invited any of us students to come visit her; a friend and I made a three-week trip. Then, in college, I led a missions team to Quito through my university.
My third time in Quito was two years ago with Anglers. Coach Rollins had been taking teams to spend time with Cumbre Alta for many years, but it was my first time seeing their work in person. I quickly connected with their vision and ministry philosophy. It was so similar to our own at Anglers FC. I knew there was great opportunity for long term partnership with them beyond the trip in 2022.
In 2023, Cumbre Alta came to us in Colorado Springs. They hosted a bilingual soccer camp. It was another great opportunity for friendships between our two organizations to blossom. We had a great time playing pickup soccer in the park and showing them all Colorado Springs has to offer.
As I return to Quito in just under a week, I look forward to seeing some of these friends I have made over the last two years. They may not yet be “old friends”, but I am looking forward to growing in relationship with them. The goal of our Missions program within Anglers is to be a short-term investment into a long-term work. We want to visit contacts who are making daily impact over a long period of time. We want to learn from them so that we may better serve our city of Colorado Springs. Cumbre Alta fits this description perfectly. I cannot wait to see them again!
